Tinahely House

Two storey extension, Wicklow

2015

254 m2

The client brief was to accommodated the needs of a wonderful large family and provide a different sense of living. The original two storey stone house sits into the side of a hill. It is single storey facing the road, and two-storey to the rear. It was extended some years ago and the slope gave the extension a third floor basement level.

The main challenge was to tie the old house together with the existing three-storey extension. To do this we imagined the ground floor of the existing extension to be part of the landscape. A new terrace at first floor level connects directly to the sloping landscape. The main living spaces are organised around this terrace and are south-facing with stunning views overlooking mature deciduous trees and Tinahely village. The stove and floor-to-roof windows mark the strong vertical connection through the house. The landing is a vibrant and social place. It is wider at one end adding a living space which is connected to, but private from the others.

The large interconnecting living spaces allow this large family to be together and separate: doing homework, playing music, watching TV, etc.
